The Next Great Economy Is Ecology
One good thing about the recent tech layoffs is that it has freed terrific minds to approach the economy’s next big bubble: Ecology. The ecological state of our planet is a trillion-dollar enterprise that needs some attention.
You might say that this economy already exists. It does. You may say that the over 200,000 brilliant minds recently let loose with severance pay and stock options may have other things to do. You’re right. (Hawaii, Bali and Nicaragua are friendly options.)
But they should consider this.
Ecology is the world’s richest economy as it underlies our basic necessities. We all need to eat, shelter and breathe. This is a bubble that cannot burst or we burst with it.
Science says that the planet is deciding not to support us. So we need to reshape, reimagine and revalue our processes in order for humanity to survive. Everything has been done before. It just needs to be done over.
Flying to Mars is science fiction, climate change is science fact.
The first understanding is that “sustainability” is broken. People and organizations have been poking at the Sustainable Development Goals with some good work in equity, equality, education and social issues.
